Spain National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Oyarzabal · Rodri · Gavi · Pedri · Olmo · Yamal · Cucurella · Carvajal · R. Sánchez · Laporte · Pau TorresLa Roja aims to control every minute of the game through constant ball retention and technical control. This 4-5-1 lineup is designed to keep the ball in the opponent's half and squeeze the space available to the opposition. Spain uses this formation to dominate the rhythm and dictate where the game is played.
Oyarzabal protects the goal and directs the defensive line. The back four consists of Olmo at right back and Yamal at left back. Olmo acts as an overlapping full back while Yamal uses his dribbling to drive forward when needed. Pedri and Gavi serve as the two central defenders in a zonal line. Pedri is tasked to play out from the back and find teammates in midfield, while Gavi works to win the second ball. The back four works to stay compact and maintain a high line to keep the team close together.
The midfield functions with a single pivot role played by Rodri. Rodri uses his exceptional passing range and ball retention to move the ball and shield the defense from direct attacks. Alongside him, Cucurella and Carvajal operate to provide balance. Cucurella and Carvajal work to carry the ball forward and press aggressively in a mid-block to win it back high up the pitch. This central trio ensures that the connection between the defenders and the forwards remains strong through constant passing.
The attacking phase is led by R. Sánchez who operates as a lone striker. Behind him, Pau Torres and Laporte occupy the half-spaces as the two advanced midfielders. Pau Torres and Laporte look to play through the lines to create chances for the striker. R. Sánchez works as a pressing centre-forward to disrupt the opposition back line and create space for others. The attacking players look to combine in tight spaces and use quick movements to break the defensive line.
A key advantage for Spain is the ability to create numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. With Rodri, Cucurella, and Carvajal, the team can always find a spare man to recycle possession. Additionally, the team can press in coordinated waves to force the opponent into a long ball. The closeness of the players allows them to squeeze the space and deny the turn to the opposition players.
This formation relies on heavy possession and central dominance to wear down the opponent. It is best suited for matches against teams that defend in a low block and lack the speed to counter at pace.
