Starting Lineup

Arnautovic · Prass · Bachmann · Posch · Danso · Lienhart · Grillitsch · Laimer · Sabitzer · Baumgartner · R. Schmid

Austria plays with a focus on high pressing and verticality in a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to control the center of the pitch and win the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. The goal is to squeeze the space in the middle and quickly move the ball forward to the front three. This formation allows the team to transition from defense to attack with great speed.

Bachmann stays between the posts to oversee the defensive unit. Behind him, Danso and Lienhart operate as a narrow duo in a high line. These two central defenders must be able to cover large spaces and win the second ball when the team presses high. Danso provides aerial strength while Lienhart can play out from the back to start attacks. They must stay compact to prevent balls being played over the top of the two.

The midfield is the heart of this Austria lineup, using a five man unit to dominate play. Prass and Posch act as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Laimer and Grillitsch operate in the half spaces to carry the ball forward and connect the lines. Sabitzer plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to arrive late into the box or play through the lines. This group allows the team to compress the midfield and control the tempo of the game.

Up front, the team utilizes three attackers to stretch the defence. Arnautovic acts as a target man to hold up the ball and provide a central presence. Baumgartner and R. Schmid operate as wide attackers, with Baumgartner looking to cut inside and R. Schmid to spread wide and pull the defense apart. The forwards are tasked to press from the front, forcing long balls from the opposition. They look to play one-two combinations to break the line and find the feet of the striker.

This formation offers massive numerical superiority in the middle of the park. By having five players in the midfield, the team can easily create overloads and win the second ball. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and the midfield to trigger a press. This makes it very difficult for opponents to build out from the back or find a way through the middle.

This 2-5-3 formation is a high risk system built on aggression. It is best suited for matches where Austria can dominate the middle and force the opponent into errors.
