Starting Lineup

Marseille relies on a high press and quick transitions within a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to squeeze the opposition in their own half and win the ball back quickly to launch direct attacks. The goal is to disrupt the rhythm of the opponent and exploit spaces left behind as they try to play out from the back.

M.Greenwood stays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line functions as a flat back four where the players must stay compact. E.Nketiah acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks, while Hwang Hee-chan covers the space behind him to maintain a high line. P.Højbjerg operates as an attacking full back to provide width, whereas A.Harit plays as an inverted full back to help control the middle. The unit works together to keep the lines tight and prevent through balls.

The midfield consists of a five man unit designed to clog the central areas. C.Mbemba acts as the captain and sits in a central role to protect the defense and win the second ball. L.Brassier provides energy to drive forward with the ball and link the lines. The remaining three midfielders must work to compress the midfield and ensure the team is not bypassed. These players are tasked to press in a mid-block and cut off the passing lane to the opposition strikers.

Marseille uses a lone striker to lead the line and lead the press from the front. This forward must hold up the ball to allow the midfield to push up and join the attack. The wingers on either side are expected to cut inside to create overloads in the half spaces. They look to play one-two combinations with the striker or receive the ball in tight spaces to pull wide. This movement is designed to create runs in behind and isolate defenders in one on one situations.

This formation offers significant advantages through its ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having five players in the midfield, Marseille can achieve numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. The movement of the full backs also allows the team to create wide overloads when they push up to support the attack. This makes it very difficult for opponents to find space between the lines.

Marseille uses this 4-5-1 to dominate the central areas and strike on the break. It is a lineup best suited for facing teams that try to play out from the back with a slow build up.
