Arsenal focuses on being defensively solid and playing through quick transitions, utilizing a 5-3-2. This formation is built to play a counter attacking style that relies on absorbing pressure before hitting the opposition in behind. The team looks to keep a compact formation to limit space in the middle and win the second ball.
The goalkeeper 1 starts the build up and organizes the defensive line. A back five forms the foundation, with 6 acting as the central defender to hold the line and win headers. The wide centre-backs 3 and 2 are responsible for covering the channels and defending zonally. Wing backs 4 and 5 provide width but must track back to help the defense form a narrow defensive block. This unit works to squeeze the space and force a long ball from the opponent.
In the middle, Arsenal employs a three-man midfield with a carrier to maintain control. 7 sits as a single pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. 8 acts as the carrier to drive forward, while 11 works to win the ball high. These players must press in a mid-block to deny the turn and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines. The midfield unit works to compress the midfield and secure the center.
The attacking phase uses two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defense. 9 and 10 work together as the front two to press from the front and pin the last defender. They often look to hold up the ball or make runs in behind to exploit the space. Wide players 4 and 5 move up to overlap the midfield and deliver crosses into the box. This creates chances for 10 and 9 to arrive late into the box or finish cutbacks.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to maintain compactness when defending. Arsenal can also create wide overloads when 4 and 5 push high to support the attack. The midfield three provides numerical superiority in the center to intercept passes and break quickly. This allows the team to shift between a low block and a high press.
This 5-3-2 formation provides a very strong defensive foundation for Arsenal. It is best suited for games against high possession teams where the goal is to sit deep and counter at pace.
