Starting Lineup

Beljo · Jansson · Seidl · Lang · Bolla · J. Auer · Hedl · Raux Yao · Cvetkovic · Grgic · Oswald

SK Rapid focuses on defensive solidity and quick transitions, utilizing a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to play a reactive style of football, sitting deep to deny space to the opponent. The goal is to remain compact and wait for the right moment to break quickly.

Beljo starts in goal to organize the defensive unit. The back five consists of Oswald, Seidl, and Grgic, who form a narrow defensive block. Oswald and Grgic act as the wide centre-backs to cover the channels, while Seidl holds the central position to win headers and clear the lines. Lang and Jansson operate as attacking wing backs, tasked to push up and provide width when the team wins the ball. Protecting the flanks, the unit works together to maintain a low block and force the opposition wide.

The midfield functions with a double pivot consisting of J. Auer and Bolla. J. Auer sits deep to shield the defense and intercept passes, while Bolla works to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Moving into the half-spaces, Raux Yao and Cvetkovic play as wide midfielders. Raux Yao can drive forward to support the attack, while Cvetkovic is required to track back and help the wing backs. This group works to compress the midfield and win the second ball.

The attack is centered around a lone striker, Hedl, who must hold up the ball to allow teammates to advance. Hedl works to press the opposition back line and fight for long balls. When the team transitions, Lang and Jansson overlap the midfielders to stretch the defence. Raux Yao and Cvetkovic cut inside to create central threats, looking to play one-twos with Hedl. This movement is designed to create runs in behind and isolate defenders in one on one situations.

A major tactical advantage for SK Rapid is the compactness when defending in a low block. By keeping the lines close, they make it difficult for opponents to play through the lines. Moving with speed, the team benefits from rapid transitions that turn defense into attack in seconds. Additionally, the wing backs provide wide overloads when they join the attack.

The 5-4-1 formation is a disciplined way to defend deep and strike on the break. It is best suited for matches against high-possession teams that leave gaps behind their defense.
