Iran aims to play a highly vertical brand of football that seeks to hit the opposition quickly through a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to stretch the pitch and create constant pressure in the final third. By pushing many players forward, the team looks to overwhelm the opponent with sheer numbers in attack and catch them out of position.

Seyyed Hossein Hosseini stays between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back four consists of Iman Salimi and Rafael Silva on the flanks, while Arash Rezavand and Rouzbeh Cheshmi act as the central defenders. Rezavand and Cheshmi need to defend zonally and ensure they do not get caught too high when the team moves forward. The wide defenders must track back quickly to stop counter attacks, with Salimi and Salimi providing cover when the wingers push high up the pitch.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to provide a platform for the rest of the team. Jalaliddin Masharipov and Ali Karimi sit in front of the defense to shield the back four and recycle possession. Masharipov works to win the second ball and carry the ball forward, while Karimi connects the defensive and attacking lines. This pairing must be disciplined to prevent the opponent from playing through the middle, as they are the only players occupying the center of the pitch.

The attacking unit is built around four players designed to pin the last defender. Milad Zakipour and Ramin Rezaeian operate as wide wingers who look to stretch the defense and provide width. In the center, Gustavo Blanco and Mehrdad Mohammadi act as a strike partnership. They work to find space between the lines and make runs in behind to exploit gaps. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition, allowing the midfield to intercept and start a quick break.

This formation offers great speed of transition when the ball is won in the middle third. Iran can create wide overloads by having the wingers and full backs work together to get to the byline. Another strength is the ability to isolate wide players in one on one situations, which can be difficult for a back four to manage.

The 4-2-4 formation is a high risk, high reward system that prioritizes offensive pressure. It is best suited for games where the team needs to chase a result against an opponent that sits deep.
