Starting Lineup

Van de sar · Koeman · Van de ven · Aké · Frimpong · Schouten · Gullit · Reijnders · Gakpo · Cruyff · Weghorst

The Netherlands look to play with a heavy high press and verticality through a 4-3-3. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and move quickly toward the goal. The goal is to squeeze the space in the opposition half and force turnovers. By staying compact and aggressive, the team looks to play through the lines and exploit any gaps left by the opponent.

Van de sar sits in goal to command the area and sweep behind a high line. The back four functions with plenty of movement. Frimpong acts as an attacking wing back to provide width on the right, while Aké holds his position to provide balance on the left. Van de ven uses his pace to cover the space behind the high line if the opposition hits in behind. Koeman acts as a ball playing defender who can hit long passes to switch play and start attacks from deep.

In the middle of the pitch, the team utilizes a three man midfield with a single pivot. Schouten sits deep to shield the defense and intercept passes. Gullit uses his massive physical presence and power to drive forward with the ball and arrive late into the box. Reijnders connects the defensive and attacking lines by carrying the ball forward and recycling possession. This trio works to compress the midfield and prevent the opponent from playing through the center.

The attack features three players across the front. Weghorst plays as a target man to hold up the ball and win the header during crosses. Gakpo plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and find space between the lines. Cruyff operates from the right side, using his dribbling to pull defenders out of position and create chances. The team uses the width of the pitch to stretch the defense, often using overlaps from Frimpong to deliver crosses for Weghorst.

One major advantage for the Netherlands is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The front three and the midfield trio work together to trigger a press as soon as the ball enters their zone. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when Frimpong pushes up to overlap the winger. This puts immense pressure on the opposition full backs and allows the team to pin the last defender.

This 4-3-3 formation relies on aggressive pressing and quick vertical transitions. It is best suited for games against teams that try to play short from the back under pressure.
