Atlético plays a high press and very vertical game in this 2-5-3 formation. The identity of the club is built on winning the ball high up the pitch and attacking with directness. This formation is designed to squeeze the space in the middle of the park and force the opposition into mistakes. By utilizing a heavy central presence, the team looks to dominate the ball and transition quickly when possession is regained.

Oblak acts as the goalkeeper and the last line of defense. The defensive unit functions with a very narrow back line consisting of only two central defenders, Giménez and Azpilicueta. Giménez is dominant in the air and provides the physical presence to win the header, while Azpilicueta is tasked to cover space and track back to protect the flanks. They play a high line to keep the unit compact and set the offside trap against runners.

The midfield is a dense five man unit that controls the center of the pitch. Mandava and Molina act as a double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. In front of them, de Paul and M. Llorente operate as two tens in the half-spaces to carry the ball forward and press aggressively. Koke acts as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to pick up runners and play through the lines to find the front three. This midfield group works to compress the midfield and deny the pivot of the opposition.

The attack features three players across the front with J. Félix acting as a pressing centre-forward. Griezmann operates as an inverted winger who cuts inside to find the feet of the striker, while Lemar works on the opposite flank to provide width and whip it in. The forwards use combinations in tight spaces to break the line. The movement of Griezmann and Lemar is intended to pull wide and stretch the defence, creating runs in behind for J. Félix to exploit.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages, such as numerical superiority in midfield which makes it hard for opponents to progress through the thirds. The ability to press high in coordinated waves allows Atlético to win it back high up the pitch. There is also a great capacity for speed of transition, allowing the team to hit in behind on the transition and catch the opposition before they can settle.
