Both MARTINEZ and GUTIÉRREZ are tasked to push up and provide width. Centrally, LOPEZ and BLIND form the defensive pairing. BLIND provides experience to help cover the space while LOPEZ works to win headers and intercept passes. This defensive unit must stay compact to prevent being caught out on the break when the full backs push forward.

A double pivot is used in midfield to manage the center of the pitch. HERRERA and SOLIS work together to shield the defense and win the second ball. While HERRERA carries the ball forward to connect the defensive line to the attack, SOLIS works to press aggressively to win the ball back. This pair must be disciplined to ensure they do not leave the center too open when the team pushes into the final third. They are responsible to recycle possession and find the feet of the striker during build up play.

Up front, the attacking unit is aggressive. TSYGANKOV and PORTU occupy the wide areas as wingers to stretch the defense and provide service from the flanks. While TSYGANKOV looks to cut inside to create more central threats, PORTU aims to get to the byline and deliver early crosses. In the center, DOVBYK works to hold up the ball and win headers. IVAN MARTIN plays alongside him to make runs in behind and occupy the space between the lines. This quartet is designed to pin the last defender and create chances in the penalty area.

One major advantage for Girona is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of the wingers and the overlapping runs of the full backs. The formation also offers a high press in coordinated waves, making it difficult for the opposition to play out from the back. By having four players high up the pitch, the team can isolate wide players in one on one situations and strike quickly during transitions.
