Starting Lineup

Grbic · Baumgartner · Seiwald · Schlager · Sabitzer · Grillitsch · Alaba · Laimer · Danso · Lienhart · Pentz

Austria aims to play with an aggressive high press and rapid transition identity through a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and move quickly toward the opponent goal. The team looks to squeeze the space in the middle of the pitch and use a heavy work rate to disrupt the rhythm of the opposition.

Grbic operates as the goalkeeper to command the defensive line. The back four features Baumgartner at right back and Sabitzer at left back, with Seiwald and Schlager as the two central defenders. Schlager and Seiwald focus on winning the header and covering for one another if the line is breached. Baumgartner and Sabitzer are tasked to overlap the winger to provide width, while also being ready to track back and defend the wide areas.

The midfield is a three man midfield with a carrier that works to create a compact block in the center. Grillitsch and Alaba work in a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Alaba often drops deep to collect the ball and play short from the back. Laimer acts as the carrier who drives forward with the ball to break the line. On the flanks, Lienhart and Danso operate as attacking midfielders who press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and support the lone striker.

In the attacking phase, Pentz plays as a lone pressing centre-forward. Pentz works to hold up the ball and lay it off to allow others to join the attack. Lienhart and Danso move into the half spaces to create passing lanes and pull wide to stretch the defence. This movement creates chances to hit in behind on the transition and use cutbacks from the byline.

Numerical superiority in the midfield during the middle third provides a clear advantage for Austria. The team can press in coordinated waves to force a long ball from the opposition. Such a formation also allows for great speed of transition, making it hard for opponents to reset their defensive block.

This 4-5-1 formation is a high energy system built on pressing and quick counters. It is most effective against teams that try to play out from the back under heavy pressure.
