The midfield functions with a double pivot to protect the center. Thuram and Douglas Luiz sit in front of the defense to shield the back four. Thuram uses his power to win the second ball and intercept passes. Douglas Luiz looks to recycle possession and play short from the back. Koopmeiners operates as a central engine who makes late runs into the box. Yldiz plays in the half spaces to carry the ball forward. Chiesa plays on the left of the midfield to cut inside and find the feet of the striker. This unit connects the defense and attack by driving the ball into the final third.

Vlahovic acts as a lone striker and a target man for the team. He uses his strength to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. The attack is built through combinations with the five midfielders. Chiesa and Yldiz look to stretch the defense by pulling wide or making runs in behind. The team wants to bypass the midfield quickly once they win possession. Vlahovic focuses on finding space to receive on the half turn and turn toward goal.

One major advantage is the compactness when defending. Having five players in the middle makes it very hard for opponents to play through the lines. Another strength is the speed of transition.
