Southampton uses a 3-5-2 to dominate the central areas of the field. This formation is built to press from the front and win the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. The team focuses on controlling the middle of the pitch and using quick transitions to punish teams that fail to track back.

Forster guards the goal to manage the defensive line. The back three features Lovren, Van Dijk, and Alderweild. Van Dijk serves as a ball playing defender with incredible passing range and aerial strength to win headers. Lovren and Alderweild provide the cover, often stepping up to intercept passes or dropping back to cover the space behind the midfield. The unit works to hold a compact block and keep the lines close together.

The midfield relies on a double pivot of Ward-Prowse and Schneiderlin to provide stability. Schneiderlin works to sit deep and protect the center, while Ward-Prowse looks to drive forward and use his set piece delivery to find teammates. Ahead of them, Tadic, Bale, and Oxlade-Chamberlain create a wall of pressure. Tadic and Oxlade-Chamberlain move between the lines to receive on the half turn, while Bale provides the energy to carry the ball forward. This allows the team to progress through the thirds and recycle possession.

Mane and Ings lead the line as a two man forward partnership. Mane uses his pace and high pressing intensity to force long balls and hunt the ball near the opposition goal. Ings works to hold up the ball and lay it off to Mane or other runners. Their movement is designed to pull the defenders apart and create space for late arrivals from the midfield.

A major strength of this Southampton lineup is the numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. By having five players in the middle, the team can squeeze the space and deny the turn to opposition playmakers. The ability to press in coordinated waves allows the team to win the ball back quickly and hit in behind on the transition.

This 3-5-2 is a high intensity system that relies on central control and rapid transitions. It works best against teams that try to build play through the middle and lack the speed to deal with a high press.
