Roma operates with a focus on defensive solidity and quick transitions. The team utilizes a 5-2-3 formation to remain compact when out of possession. This lineup is built to sit deep and then strike with pace to catch the opponent off guard through direct play.

Svilar stays in goal to protect the net. The defensive unit functions as a back five with Celik acting as the right wing back and Angeliño as the left wing back. In the center, Mancini, Parades, and N'dicka form a strong line. Mancini and N'dicka are dominant in the air and work to cover the space when the wing backs push up. Parades holds the center to clear the lines and win the second ball. Celik and Angeliño push up to overlap the winger and provide width during the attacking phase.

The midfield features a two-man midfield with Pellegrini and Soule. Pellegrini works to connect the defensive and attacking lines by carrying the ball forward. Soule works to press in a mid-block and win back the ball high up the pitch. Together, they must work to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines and ensure they can recycle possession effectively to keep the ball moving.

In the attacking phase, Roma uses three attackers. Dobvyk plays as a target man to hold up the ball and win the header. El Shaarawy and Dybala act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create threats. While the forwards press the opposition back line, the wing backs provide width to stretch the defence. The team aims to hit in behind on the transition, looking to find the feet of the striker or deliver early crosses from the flanks to attack the far post.

One tactical advantage is the compactness when defending, making it difficult for teams to find gaps in the center. The formation also allows for wide overloads as Angeliño and El Shaarawy work together to pin the last defender. Additionally, the speed of transition allows the team to move from a low block to an attacking position very quickly to catch opponents.

This 5-2-3 formation provides Roma with a reliable defensive base and a way to exploit space. It is best suited for facing teams that play with a high line and leave territory behind their defenders.
