Prioritizing defensive solidity and quick transitions, Sporting CP utilizes a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to play a counter attacking style of football. The team aims to absorb pressure and then break quickly once the ball is recovered in the middle third.

Ricardo guards the goal as the lone goalkeeper. The back line functions as a five man unit. W.Carvalho and Moutinho act as ball playing defenders in the central slots, while Rojo is there to be dominant in the air and cover the space behind. S.Coates and C.Soares play as attacking wing backs to provide width. They are expected to push high to overlap the midfielders and stretch the defence during the attacking phase. The unit works to hold the line and ensure they are not caught out by long balls.

The midfield is a three man unit featuring players who can both defend and drive forward. B.Fernandes works to connect the defensive and attacking lines, using his passing range to switch play and find teammates. Nani and Quaresma work to press in a mid-block to win the ball back high up the pitch. They help to compress the midfield and ensure the opposition cannot easily play through the lines. B.Fernandes often drops to receive the ball from the defenders to start the build up.

The attack features two forwards in a partnership. CR7 works as a pressing centre forward, using his aerial strength and finishing to punish mistakes. H.Postiga plays to hold up the ball and lay it off to his partner. S.Coates and C.Soares provide the width by pushing up to get to the byline and whip it in. This movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow the strikers to attack the far post or the near post.

The formation offers significant tactical advantages. The team can maintain compactness when defending in a low block to deny the turn of attackers. The ability to hit in behind on the transition is a major threat when B.Fernandes or Nani find space. Additionally, the wide overloads from S.Coates and C.Soares help to pull the opposition defenders out of position and create one on one situations.

Sporting CP employs this 5-3-2 to remain a defensively solid unit. This formation is best suited for facing high possession teams that the team can beat through speed of transition.
