Starting Lineup

Pentz · Arnautovic · Baumgartner · Wimmer · Schlager · Sabitzer · Laimer · Posch · Prass · Lienhart · Wöber

Austria plays with a very aggressive identity centered on winning the ball back high up the pitch. This lineup uses a 2-5-3 formation to squeeze the space and overwhelm the opposition. The goal is to win the second ball and move the play forward quickly to catch the opponent out of position.

Pentz stays in goal to protect the two central defenders. Lienhart and Wöber operate as a narrow defensive block in a very high line. They must be ready to step up to set the offside trap or cover for the midfield. Lienhart is strong in the air while Wöber looks to play out from the back and intercept long balls. Because there are only two in the back, they must hold the line and communicate well to avoid being caught by runs in behind.

The midfield is a dense area where Austria tries to control the game. Posch and Prass act as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Schlager and Laimer operate in the half spaces to drive forward with the ball and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Sabitzer plays as an attacking ten behind the striker and has the vision to play through the lines. He uses his passing range to find the forwards. This five man unit allows the team to win it back high up the pitch through aggressive pressing.

The front line uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Arnautovic acts as a target man to hold up the ball and lay it off to oncoming runners. Baumgartner and Wimmer operate on the flanks to provide width and look to cut inside into the box. They press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. The team seeks to attack in combinations and use Sabitzer to split the defence with a through ball. This movement allows Baumgartner and Wimmer to arrive late into the box or find space for cutbacks.

A major strength of this Austria lineup is the numerical superiority in midfield. By packing the middle, they can compress the midfield and win the second ball easily. Another advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it hard for the opponent to build from the back. The speed of transition when they win the ball is also high because the players are positioned to break quickly.

This 2-5-3 formation is built for high intensity and dominance. It is best suited for matches where the team wants to pin the opponent in their own half and control the tempo.
