Starting Lineup

SK Rapid plays a highly vertical game built around overwhelming the opposition with numbers in the final third, utilizing a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup prioritizes heavy pressure and rapid transitions to catch the opponent before they can settle. The goal is to push the play forward as quickly as possible, moving away from slow buildup to favor a direct and aggressive style of play.

Hedl guards the goal as the lone goalkeeper in this high risk formation. The defensive unit consists of a small back two with Raux Yao and Cvetkovic acting as central defenders. Because the team plays with so many players forward, these two must be prepared to cover huge amounts of space and win the second ball whenever the opposition clears their lines. They often sit deep to defend against long balls while looking to step up and squeeze the space once the midfield regains possession.

The midfield is organized as a four man block that provides both width and central coverage. J. Auer and Bolla act as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. They are tasked with winning the ball and immediately finding the more advanced players. Grgic and Oswald operate as two tens in the half spaces, sitting slightly higher to link the midfield to the attack. Grgic and Oswald look to find pockets of space to receive the ball and play through the lines to the front four.

The attack is extremely aggressive, utilizing four players across the front line to pin the opposition back. Burgstaller and Beljo operate as two forwards in a partnership, often working to hold up the ball or make runs in behind. They are supported by Seidl and Jansson, who act as wide wingers to stretch the defense. Seidl and Jansson often look to get to the byline to deliver crosses or cut inside to create shooting opportunities, ensuring the attack has both central presence and significant width.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages, particularly regarding numerical superiority in the attacking third. By flooding the final area, SK Rapid can create constant chaos and isolate defenders in one on one situations. The ability to press high in coordinated waves makes it very difficult for the opponent to build play out from the back. When the team wins the ball, the speed of transition from the double pivot to the four attackers makes them lethal on the counter.
