The midfield is a dense block of five players that connects the defense to the attack. Mandava and Molina form a deep lying playmaker pairing to shield the defense and recycle possession. M. Llorente and de Paul operate as inverted eights, with de Paul using his high work rate to drive forward with the ball. Koke acts as the attacking ten, looking to play through the lines and find the feet of the attackers.

The attack uses three players across the front to stretch the defense. Sørloth acts as a pressing centre forward and target man to hold up the ball and win the second ball. Griezmann plays as an inverted winger on the right, often cutting inside to use his passing range to split the defense with a through ball. J. Félix stays wide on the left to provide width and create space for others. They look to hit in behind on the transition to catch the opponent out of position.
