Rijeka prioritizes a defensive block and quick transitions through a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to stay compact and frustrate opponents by sitting deep in a low block. The team aims to deny space between the lines and relies on winning the second ball to launch direct attacks.

Posavec guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back line works as a narrow defensive block with Selahi acting as the central anchor to clear the lines. Beside him, Galešić and Radeljić provide strength in the air to defend crosses and mark the opposition strikers. Smolčić and Čabraja act as attacking wing backs, tasked to push up and provide width when the team wins the ball. They must track back quickly to prevent being caught out of position when the opponent switches play.

The midfield functions as a flat four to protect the zone in front of the defenders. Janković and Fruk operate as a central pairing to control the middle and shield the defense. Janković works to intercept passes and break the play, while Fruk looks to recycle possession and find the wide players. On the flanks, Rukavina and Pašalić provide the width in the midfield line, tasked to squeeze the space and force the opposition wide. This four-man unit keeps the lines close to ensure the opposition cannot play through the middle.

In the attacking phase, Ivanović acts as a lone striker to hold up the ball and lead the press from the front. He works to pin the last defender and create space for the midfield to join the attack. The team builds play by finding the wing backs, Smolčić and Čabraja, to get to the byline or deliver early crosses into the box. When Rijeka transitions, the goal is to hit in behind the defense or use Ivanović to lay it off for late runners.

This formation offers significant compactness when defending, making it very hard for opponents to find gaps in the central areas. The presence of three central defenders and a tight midfield bank makes the team difficult to break down in a low block. Additionally, the use of wing backs allows for wide overloads when the team moves from a defensive stance into an attacking one.
