Starting Lineup

Prioritizing defensive stability and quick transitions, Atlético plays a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to sit in a compact mid-block before hitting teams with verticality. The goal is to squeeze the space between lines and use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition when the ball is won back.

Jan Oblak starts in goal to organize the defensive unit. The back line functions as a back three with Giménez, Hancko, and Le Normand. Giménez acts as the central figure, dominant in the air and reliable when defending the middle. Le Normand and Hancko provide cover on either side, ready to step up or sweep behind the line to intercept passes. The three defenders must hold a compact line to deny any space between them.

In the middle of the pitch, Atlético uses a midfield four. Koke operates as the central conductor, looking to recycle possession and connect the defense to the attack. Gallagher provides immense pressing intensity to win the ball back high up the pitch. On the flanks, Lino and Llorente act as wide midfielders who provide much needed width. The attacking front line consists of three players. Sorloth acts as the target man, using his aerial strength to hold up the ball and provide a focal point. Griezmann plays as a winger who frequently cuts inside to create chances or find the feet of the striker. Julián occupies the other wide position, looking to exploit spaces behind the opposition full backs. This trio works to press the opposition back line and create runs in behind.

One major strength of this Atlético lineup is the ability to press in a mid-block and win the second ball. The combination of Koke and Gallagher allows the team to control the center and disrupt the opponent. Another advantage comes from the width provided by Lino and Llorente, which allows for quick switches of play to isolate wide players in one on one situations.
