Starting Lineup

Svilar · Mancini · Ndicka · Angelino · RB TBD · Parades · Le Fee · LW TBD / Pellegrini · Soule · Dybala · Dovbyk

Roma operates with a highly vertical 4-2-4 formation. This lineup focuses on aggressive attacking and quick transitions to catch opponents off guard. By committing many players to the final third, the team looks to overwhelm the opposition through sheer numbers and direct play.

Svilar guards the goal as the last line of defense. Ndicka and Mancini occupy the central roles within a flat back four. Mancini uses his aerial strength to clear crosses and defend the box, while Ndicka provides cover for the high line. To provide width, Angelino functions as an attacking full back. The RB TBD must track back to cover the space vacated by the advanced wing backs.

In the middle of the pitch, a double pivot manages the transition. Parades sits deep to shield the defense and intercept passes, often dropping between the center backs to receive the ball. Le Fee operates as a carrier who links the defense to the attack, using his pressing intensity to win the ball high up the pitch. This duo must hold a compact shape to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines when the front four push up.

The attacking unit uses two forwards to stretch the opposition. Dovbyk acts as a powerful target man, using his strength to hold up the ball and win the second ball. Dybala plays as a second striker in the hole, using his passing range and dribbling to create chances for others. Combining these two players helps the team build the attack. Soule stays wide on the right but looks to cut inside to find space. Pellegrini occupies the left side to pull defenders wide, often looking to arrive late into the box. Finally, the front four press the opposition back line to prevent them from playing out from the back.

This 4-2-4 offers Roma the advantage of being able to press high in coordinated waves. The players can trigger a press from the front to force a long ball from the opponent. Furthermore, the presence of Dovbyk and Dybala allows the team to combine in tight spaces and play through the lines. The overlapping runs from Angelino also create wide overloads that force the opposition to shift across the pitch.

The formation represents a high pressing identity designed to dominate the attacking third. It is most effective when facing opponents that struggle to play out from the back under heavy pressure.
