Netherlands National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Maatsen · Timber · van de Ven · de Ligt · Verbruggen · Frimpong · Koopmeiners · de Jong · Malen · Bergwijn · SimonsThe Netherlands play with a high press and rapid transition using a 3-4-3. This lineup is built to squeeze the space in the opposition half and win the ball back high up the pitch to launch attacks. By using wide attackers and wing backs, the Oranje aim to stretch the defence and create multiple passing lanes.
Verbruggen acts as the goalkeeper, looking to play short from the back to start the build up. The back three consists of de Ligt, Timber, and van de Ven. de Ligt sits central to command the line and win headers, while Timber and van de Ven act as wide centre-backs to cover the flanks. van de Ven uses his pace to sweep behind a high line if the opposition tries to hit in behind on the transition. This unit works to stay compact when the team drops into a mid-block.
The midfield functions as a central engine with a double pivot of de Jong and Koopmeiners. de Jong acts as a deep-lying playmaker to recycle possession and move the ball through the lines, while Koopmeiners works to press aggressively and arrive late into the box. On the flanks, Maatsen and Frimpong act as attacking wing backs to provide width. Frimpong is known for his high pressing intensity and ability to carry the ball forward, while Maatsen provides balance to ensure the team can shift to cover the flanks.
Up front, the Netherlands use three attackers to pin the last defender. Malen acts as the central presence to hold up the ball and find the feet of the striker in combinations. Simons and Bergwijn operate as wide attackers, with Simons looking to cut inside to create space for the overlapping runs of Frimpong. Bergwijn pulls wide to stretch the defence and create gaps for Malen to exploit. The front line presses from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of Maatsen and Frimpong. When they push high, they combine with the wingers to isolate wide players in one on one situations. Another strength is the speed of transition, where de Jong can immediately switch play to the wings. The team also maintains the ability to press in coordinated waves, making it hard for opponents to play out from the back.
This 3-4-3 formation relies on aggressive pressing and rapid verticality. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play under pressure or those that allow opponents to hit in behind on the transition.
