Atlético Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Oblak · Le Normand · Witsel · Llorente · Reinildo · Koke · De Paul · Gallagher · Griezmann · Lino · ÁlvarezSeeking to win the ball back high up the pitch through heavy pressure, Atlético uses a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to hit in behind on the transition and exploit spaces left by an advancing opponent. The team relies on intense energy to force errors and move the ball forward vertically to the front four.
Oblak sits between the posts to guard the goal. The defensive unit works in a flat back four, with Reinildo acting as the left back and Llorente providing energy as the right back. Le Normand and Witsel form the central pairing, where Witsel uses his experience to hold the line while Le Normand stays compact to cover space. This back four often has to drop into a low block when the team loses possession to deny the turn to opposition attackers.
A double pivot controls the center of the pitch to provide a layer of protection for the defenders. Koke, who is the captain (C), acts as a deep lying playmaker to recycle possession and switch play. He is joined by De Paul, who acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball and connects the defensive and attacking lines. These two midfielders must work hard to squeeze the space and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.
The attacking line is composed of four players designed to stretch the defence. Lino plays on the left as an inverted winger to cut inside, while Griezmann operates on the right to create chances and drop into the half spaces. Gallagher and Álvarez act as a strike partnership, with Álvarez looking to make runs in behind and Gallagher using his pressing intensity to trigger a press from the front. This front line aims to isolate wide players in one on one situations or find the feet of the striker during quick transitions.
Atlético gains a clear advantage through their ability to press high in coordinated waves. By using a heavy front four, they can force a long ball from the opposition and win the second ball frequently. This setup also offers significant speed of transition, allowing the team to move from a defensive position to an attacking one in seconds.
This 4-2-4 formation focuses on aggressive pressing and rapid counter attacks. It is best suited for games against opponents that play a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
