Birmingham plays with a high press and a heavy focus on direct verticality using a 5-2-3. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and use the passing range of the midfielders to stretch the opposition. Begovic guards the goal while the defensive unit works as a back five. Matic sits central in the defensive block to provide cover and win the second ball. The wide defenders, Ivanovic and Kolarov, act as attacking wing backs who push high to provide width. The midfield functions as a two man unit consisting of Rakitic and Modric. Modric acts as the primary creator who can receive on the half-turn and switch play to the flanks. Rakitic helps to connect the defensive and attacking lines by carrying the ball forward and pressing aggressively to win the ball high. Together, they control the tempo and ensure the team can recycle possession when the initial attack fails. They must work hard to cover the central spaces when the wing backs push forward.

Birmingham uses three attackers across the front to pin the last defender. Dzeko operates as a target man, using his strength to hold up the ball and link up play between the lines. On the flanks, Tadic and Perisic act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create space for the wing backs. Tadic and Perisic press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. This setup allows Dzeko to find the feet of the striker or play a one two with the wide players to create runs in behind.
