Starting Lineup

Hermansen · Nelson · Vestergaard · Faes · JJ · Mavididi · Fatawu · Buonanotte · Zaha · Winks · Pereira

Leicester focuses on staying compact and absorbing pressure using a 5-4-1. The team aims to defend in a deep block and use the speed of the attackers to break quickly. This formation is built to frustrate opponents by denying space between the lines and then hitting in behind on the transition.

Hermansen stays between the posts to command his area. The back five consists of Nelson and Faes as wing backs, with Vestergaard, Pereira, and Winks forming the central trio. Vestergaard and Pereira provide aerial strength to win headers, while Winks covers the left side of the back line. Nelson and Faes push up to provide width when the team has the ball, but they must track back to maintain the defensive unit. This unit works to squeeze the space and force the opposition to play wide.

The midfield unit features a four-man midfield with an attacking ten, consisting of JJ, Buonanotte, Fatawu, and Mavididi. Buonanotte and Fatawu control the central area, with Buonanotte using his dribbling style to carry the ball forward. JJ works to win the second ball and connect the defense to the attack. Mavididi sits just behind the striker to receive the ball on the half-turn and play through the lines. This group tries to disrupt the opponent and recycle possession when the ball is won back high up the pitch.

Zaha leads the line as a lone striker. He is tasked to hold up the ball and wait for support from the midfield. Mavididi acts as a second striker in the hole, making runs to support Zaha in central areas. The team relies on Nelson and Faes to overlap the winger and provide crosses from the byline. When Leicester wins the ball, they look to play one-two combinations to bypass the midfield and find the feet of the striker.

One major advantage for Leicester is the compactness when defending in a low block. This makes it very hard for opponents to find gaps to pass through. Another strength is the speed of transition, especially when Mavididi and Zaha can exploit space behind the opposition defense. The formation also allows the team to create wide overloads when the wing backs push high.

This 5-4-1 formation is built to absorb pressure and strike on the counter. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their defensive line.
