Starting Lineup

J. Auer · Bolla · Hedl · Raux Yao · Cvetkovic · Grgic · Oswald · Beljo · Jansson · Seidl · Burgstaller

SK Rapid aims to play a high octane, vertical style of football using a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition with numbers in the final third and force quick transitions. By pushing so many bodies forward, the team looks to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike before the opponent can settle.

Hedl operates in goal as the last line of defense. Ahead of him, Raux Yao and Cvetkovic form a narrow pair of central defenders who must cover a lot of ground. They often play a high line to compress the space in the middle of the pitch. Because there are only two defenders, they must be able to intercept passes and defend one on one situations when the opposition breaks quickly. They need to stay compact to avoid being split by long balls.

The midfield is organized as a box with two central players and two advanced players. J. Auer and Bolla act as the double pivot to shield the back line and recycle possession. They work to win the second ball and then look to play through the lines. Grgic and Oswald play in the half spaces as attacking midfielders to connect the midfield to the front four. Grgic and Oswald press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch, while J. Auer and Bolla provide the necessary cover when the team loses possession.

The attack is incredibly aggressive with four players positioned to attack the box. Seidl and Jansson operate as wide wingers, with Seidl hugging the touchline and Jansson looking to cut inside. In the center, Burgstaller and Beljo work as a striking partnership. Burgstaller acts as a physical presence to hold up the ball, while Beljo looks to make runs in behind the defense. This front line is designed to stretch the defense and create chaos through constant movement and combinations.

One major advantage for SK Rapid is the sheer number of attackers available to pin the last defender and create passing lanes. The wide overloads created by the wingers and the attacking midfielders make it difficult for opponents to track every runner. Another strength is the ability to press in coordinated waves, using the front four to trigger a press that the midfield can immediately join.

This 2-4-4 formation is a high risk, high reward setup centered on overwhelming the opponent. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to chase a result against a side that sits deep.
