The duo must be able to win the header and clear the lines if the opposition manages to hit in behind on the transition.

The midfield is the heart of this 2-6-2 formation, consisting of six players working in a tiered system. Jurasek, Grillitsch, and Kaderabek form a deep trio that works to shield the defense and intercept passes. Grillitsch uses his passing range to move the ball forward and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Ahead of them, Samassekou, Prass, and Stach act as more advanced midfielders who drive forward with the ball. This group aims to pack the center, win the second ball, and play through the lines to stretch the opposition.

The attacking front features two forwards working in tandem. Kramaric and M. Berisha lead the line, looking to exploit any gaps in the opposition defense. Kramaric relies on his movement and clinical finishing to find space and score. The two attackers work to press the opposition back line and force a long ball. Because the midfield is so crowded, the forwards often have to hold up the ball or receive on the half-turn to allow the advancing midfielders to arrive late into the box.

One major advantage for Hoffenheim is the numerical superiority in the midfield. By packing six players into the central zones, the team can easily win the second ball and dominate possession.
