Espanyol aims to control the pitch through high pressing and intense verticality using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup focuses on overwhelming the opposition in the middle third to win the ball back quickly and launch direct attacks. The goal is to use the heavy presence in the middle to push the team forward and create constant pressure on the opponent.

Diego Lopez operates between the posts to provide stability from the back. The defense relies on a narrow duo of Demichelis and Roncaglia who must stay compact to protect the center. Because there are only two central defenders, they often have to step up to meet attackers or cover the space behind when the midfield pushes high. The defensive unit needs to be extremely disciplined to avoid being exposed by long balls behind them.

The midfield is the engine room of the Espanyol formation, functioning as a five man block that occupies the entire width of the pitch. Juanfran and Capdevilla act as a double pivot to shield the two center backs and recycle possession. Zabaleta sits just ahead to drive forward with the ball and connect the lines. On the flanks, P.Coutinho and Nakamura operate in the half spaces to create chances and press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch.

The attacking front line uses three players to stretch the defence and pin the last defender. Etoo acts as a pressing centre forward, using his pace and movement to harass the opposition back line. Sabrosa and Osvaldo play as wide attackers, with Sabrosa on the left and Osvaldo on the right, to create width and provide options for cutbacks. They work in combinations to exploit gaps, often looking to hit in behind on the transition or find the feet of the striker in tight spaces.

One major advantage of this lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to build from the back. The numerical superiority in midfield allows the team to dominate the central areas and squeeze the space. This setup also allows for quick transitions where the wide players can immediately isolate a one on one wide to exploit mismatches.

This 2-5-3 formation is built for a team that wants to dominate through aggression and central control. It is best suited for games where the opponent struggles to play through a heavy press or lacks the speed to punish a high defensive line.
