Starting Lineup

Arsenal relies on a high press and quick transitions within a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup aims to squeeze the pitch and win the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. The team looks to control central areas while using wide players to stretch the defense during the attacking phase.

Raya starts in goal to command the area and play short from the back. The back line functions as a back five with Partey sitting as the central defender to provide extra cover. Saliba acts as a ball playing defender on the right while Gabriel defends on the left to win the header and dominate physically. Zinchenko operates as an attacking wing back on the left to push high up the pitch, while White serves as the right wing back to provide width and track back when needed.

The midfield consists of a two man unit that must work hard to cover the ground. Rice plays as a carrier to drive forward with the ball and shields the defense when the team is under pressure. Ødegaard operates as a creator who connects the defensive and attacking lines through his passing range. This pair must often drop deep to help the back five or press aggressively to win it back high up the pitch.

In the final third, Arsenal uses three attackers to pin the last defender. Havertz acts as a pressing centre forward who can hold up the ball and link up play between the lines. Saka plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside and create chances, while Trossard occupies the left wing to find space in the half spaces. The forwards are tasked to press from the front and trigger a press to force a long ball from the opposition.

This formation provides Arsenal with great security in the middle and allows for wide overloads when the wing backs push up. The team can quickly switch play to isolate Saka in one on one situations. Using a back five also ensures compactness when defending against teams that look to play through the lines.
