Focusing on a compact defensive block and quick transitions, Atlético operates with a 5-3-2 formation. J. Oblak guards the goal and provides a reliable presence behind a back five. The defensive unit uses a central trio of J. M. Gimenez, R. Le Normand, and A. Witsel to control the box. J. M. Gimenez and R. Le Normand work to win the header and clear the lines, while A. Witsel acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks. N. This trio works to squeeze the space in the middle and press the opposition when they try to play through the lines.

The attacking line uses two forwards to stretch the defence. J. Alvarez plays as a pressing centre-forward to trigger a press from the front, while A. Griezmann operates as a second striker in the hole to link up play between the lines. They work in combinations to exploit the space behind the opposition defense. N. Molina and R.
