Atlético aims to dominate the middle of the pitch through a heavy 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a high press and win the ball back high up the pitch. By committing many players forward, the team seeks to squeeze the space and force errors in the opposition half.

Oblak stays in goal to guard the net. The defensive unit consists of a high line with only two central defenders, Le Normand and Giménez. Giménez uses his aerial strength to win the header when the opposition goes direct, while Le Normand must step up to intercept passes. Because there are no wide defenders in the back line, these two must cover massive amounts of space and defend zonally to prevent being stretched wide.

The midfield functions with a five-man block to control the game. Molina and Mandava form a double pivot to shield the defense and protect the two central defenders. M. Llorente and de Paul act as inverted eights who carry the ball forward and press in a mid-block to win the second ball. Koke sits ahead of them as an attacking ten to connect the lines and find the feet of the striker. This heavy concentration of players allows the team to compress the midfield and deny the pivot of the opponent.

A front three leads the attack with J. Álvarez acting as a pressing centre-forward. J. Félix and Griezmann play as inverted wingers who cut inside to search for space in the half spaces. They look to play quick combinations and hit in behind the defense on the transition. The team can play short from the back to build in triangles before the attackers look to exploit the wide areas. J. Álvarez works to pin the last defender, allowing the others to arrive late into the box.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By packing the center, the team can quickly recycle possession and play through the lines. Another advantage is the ability to press in coordinated waves, making it very hard for the opponent to build out from the back. The speed of transition is also high when the ball is won back high up the pitch.

This 2-5-3 formation is a high-risk system designed for total dominance. It is best suited for games where Atlético needs to break down a low block through constant pressure.
