These two must hold a high line and stay compact to protect the center, as there is very little protection in front of them.

In the middle of the pitch, the midfield connects the defense to the attack. Cambiasso acts as the anchor, sitting deep to shield the two center backs and win the second ball. Zanetti and Maicon occupy the wide areas of the central four, with Zanetti using his incredible work rate to track back and cover the flank. Sneijder plays as the attacking ten, sitting behind the front four to play through the lines and use his passing range to find teammates in dangerous areas.

The attacking unit is a devastating force with four players across the front. Ronaldo plays on the right, looking to cut inside and use his explosive pace to break the line. On the left, Adriano uses his power to carry the ball forward and drive at the defense. Recoba and Milito operate in the center to provide a dual threat. Milito is able to hold up the ball and lay it off for others, while Recoba looks to link up play between the lines and arrive late into the box.

One advantage of this Inter formation is the ability to create massive numerical superiority in the final third. With so many attackers, it becomes very difficult for opponents to mark every runner. When Maicon and Zanetti push forward, they create wide overloads that stretch the defence and force the opposition to pull defenders out of position. The team also excels at the speed of transition, using the movement of the front four to break quickly once the ball is won.

This 2-4-4 lineup is a high risk method of playing that focuses on pure offensive dominance. It is best suited for games where the team must score multiple goals against a side that sits deep.
