Roma Football Formation
Starting Lineup
RUI PATRICIO · SAMUEL · ZAGO · SMALLING · CANDELA · DE ROSSI · FALCÃO · PEROTTA · MHYKTARIAN · TOTTI · BATISTUTARoma aims to control the central areas and overwhelm the opposition through a heavy concentration of players in the middle. This lineup employs a 2-6-2 formation to drive the game forward and dominate the tempo. By crowding the center, the team looks to win the second ball and move the play quickly to the front line to catch the opponent off guard.
RUI PATRICIO guards the goal and manages the small defensive unit from the back. The defensive lineup uses a very narrow two man pairing with ZAGO and SAMUEL. ZAGO works as a ball playing defender who can distribute from the back, while SAMUEL is dominant in the air to protect the penalty area. These two must stay compact and work together to cover any space that opens up as the massive midfield line moves up the pitch.
The midfield is the heart of the team, functioning as a massive six man block. SMALLING and CANDELA sit in a double pivot to shield the defense and provide protection to the two central defenders. DE ROSSI and MHYKTARIAN work as inverted eights to drive forward with the ball and connect the defense to the attack. Further up, FALCÃO and PEROTTA operate in the half spaces to provide width and support the strikers. This heavy presence allows Roma to recycle possession and win the ball back high up the pitch.
In the final third, the team uses two forwards in a partnership. BATISTUTA acts as a target man to hold up the ball and pin the last defender, while TOTTI plays as a second striker in the hole to find the feet of the striker and create chances. The wide players, FALCÃO and PEROTTA, provide the necessary width to stretch the defense and allow the central players to move into space. This formation creates many opportunities for combinations in tight spaces and quick attacks in transition.
A clear tactical advantage for Roma is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very difficult for the opponent to progress through the thirds. The formation also allows for wide overloads when FALCÃO and PEROTTA pull wide to create space for the central players to run into. Additionally, the sheer number of players in the middle helps the team squeeze the space and maintain a compact presence whenever they lose the ball.
The 2-6-2 formation focuses on central dominance and overwhelming the opponent in the middle of the pitch. This lineup is most effective against teams that play with a narrow midfield and struggle to deal with coordinated waves of pressure.
