United States National Soccer Team Formation
Starting Lineup
MEOLA · CLAVIJO · LALAS · BALBOA · CALIGIURI · DOOLEY · HARKES · SORBER · RAMOS · WYNALDA · STEWARTUnited States looks to play a vertical game through a 4-4-2. This formation relies on direct play and quick transitions to catch opponents out of position. Moving the ball forward rapidly once they win it back allows the team to catch the opposition before they can reset. Such a formation is built to play with speed and aggression in the final third.
MEOLA stays between the posts to organize the unit and manage the defensive line. The defensive unit sits in a flat back four to maintain compactness across the pitch. CLAVIJO plays as the right back to stretch the defence, while CALIGIURI stays at left back to hold the line. LALAS and BALBOA form the central pair where BALBOA stays deep to win headers and protect the area, while LALAS steps up to intercept passes and cover the space behind the high line.
The central part of the lineup features a pairing of SORBER and DOOLEY to control the center of the park. DOOLEY works to shield the defense and win the second ball to keep play moving. SORBER drives forward with the ball to break the line and carry the ball into the attacking half. HARKES operates on the right flank to provide width, and RAMOS plays on the left to track back and help the defense. This unit links the back line to the two strikers by recycling possession and finding the feet of the strikers.
The attack features a two-man partnership with WYNALDA and STEWART leading the way. WYNALDA acts as a pressing centre-forward to force a long ball from the opposition. STEWART looks to make runs in behind to exploit the space. They combine in tight spaces to pull the defenders out of position. Wingers HARKES and RAMOS push up to support the attack and deliver crosses into the box to create chances from wide areas.
One advantage is the ability to win the ball back high up the pitch through coordinated pressing in waves. The team can also use the speed of transition to hit teams on the break before they can set their defensive block. Having two strikers allows United States to pin the last defender and create space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. This creates multiple layers of threat during a single attacking move.
The 4-4-2 provides a balance between defensive solidity and direct attacking intent. This lineup works best against teams that play a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
