United States National Soccer Team Formation
Starting Lineup
MEOLA · CLAVIJO · LALAS · BALBOA · CALIGIURI · DOOLEY · HARKES · SORBER · RAMOS · WYNALDA · STEWARTDirect and vertical football is the identity of the United States, utilizing a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to move the ball quickly through the thirds and use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition. The goal is to win the second ball and strike quickly in transition to catch the opponent out of position.
Meola operates as the goalkeeper to command the penalty area. The defensive unit utilizes a flat back four that works as a single block. Lalas and Balboa serve as the central defenders and must stay close to cover the space behind the full backs. Caligiuri and Clavijo occupy the wide roles to protect the flanks. While Caligiuri will push up to overlap the winger, Clavijo stays to lock down the wide areas and defend zonally.
A central pairing of Dooley and Sorber acts as the engine of the midfield. Dooley works to carry the ball forward and connects the defensive and attacking lines. Sorber plays as a player who shields the defense and wins the second ball in the middle of the pitch. On the flanks, Harkes and Ramos provide the width. Harkes will track back to help the defense while Ramos looks to spread the play and move into the half-spaces.
The attack is led by two forwards in a partnership consisting of Wynalda and Stewart. Wynalda acts as a pressing centre-forward to hunt the ball high up the pitch and force the opposition to play long. Stewart works to hold up the ball and find the feet of the midfielders. Harkes and Ramos will look to get to the byline to deliver crosses into the box. This movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow the strikers to attack the far post.
This formation offers significant advantages in the speed of transition. By using two strikers, the United States can pin the last defender and create space for players like Dooley to arrive late into the box. The presence of Harkes and Ramos allows for wide overloads when the full backs move up, which helps to stretch the defense and create one on one situations.
This 4-4-2 formation is built for teams that want to be direct and physically dominant. It is best suited for matches against opponents that play a high line and leave space behind the defense.
