In the middle of the pitch, Giusti and Burruchaga operate as a double pivot to shield the defence. Giusti works to intercept passes and protect the central area, while Burruchaga helps to recycle possession and move the ball forward. Sastre and Bochini play further up in the half spaces to connect the midfield to the attack. Bochini works to play through the lines, while Sastre can carry the ball forward to support the lone striker. This midfield unit works to compress the midfield and deny the pivot of the opposition.

Erico leads the line as a lone striker to hold up the ball and pressure the opposition back line. The team offers great compactness when defending in a low block. This creates a wall that is difficult to break down, forcing opponents to play wide where they can be doubled up on. Another strength is the speed of transition once the ball is won in the middle.
