Mansfield looks to win the ball back high up the pitch and attack with heavy verticality through a 4-2-4. This formation is built to play a high press and pin the opposition back in their own half. The goal is to use the front four to stretch the defence and create quick transitions to catch opponents out of position.

Pym starts between the posts to oversee the defensive line. The back four functions as a flat line where Bradley and Hewwit provide the width. Bradley acts as a defensive wing back to cover the flank while Hewwit can push up to support the attack. In the middle, Kilgour and Flint work together as central defenders, with Kilgour acting as a ball playing defender to start the build up. Flint focuses on winning the header and clearing the lines when the opposition tries to go direct.

The midfield uses a double pivot to maintain control and provide a screen for the back four. Boateng and Mcatee sit in front of the defenders to pick up runners and intercept passes. Boateng works to shield the defence while Mcatee tries to carry the ball forward to link the lines. They must remain disciplined to ensure the team does not get caught in between the lines when the front four press high. This duo is responsible for recycling possession and finding the wide players quickly.

Mansfield employs a front four that uses extreme width and central presence. Keilor-dunn and Bakayoko act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to spread the play, while Keilor-dunn looks to cut inside to create chances. Oates and Swan operate as two forwards in a partnership, with Swan often acting as a pressing centre-forward to force a long ball from the opposition. They look to play one-two combinations and deliver early crosses to find the feet of the striker. The movement of the front line is designed to create runs in behind and isolate defenders in one on one situations.

This 4-2-4 lineup offers significant tactical advantages. Mansfield can create wide overloads from the wingers and full backs working together. The formation also allows for the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for the opposition to play out from the back. By keeping the front four close together, they can squeeze the space and win it back high up the pitch.

This formation is built for a high pressing, aggressive style of football. It is best suited for games where Mansfield can exploit a high defensive line and use their speed of transition to overwhelm the opponent.
