Starting Lineup

Sirni · Vasini · Cuello · Santamaría · Minella · Wergifker · Moreno · Cesarini · Pedernera · Peucelle · Ferreyra

River prioritizes defensive stability and quick transitions through a 5-2-3. This lineup is designed to sit in a compact block before launching attacks with speed. The team wants to use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition and exploit gaps in transition.

Sirni plays in goal to anchor the back line. The defensive unit operates with a back five that can shift between a mid-block and a low block. Minella sits in the centre to hold the line, while Vasini and Cuello act as the wide centre-backs to cover the space behind the wing backs. Santamaría and Wergifker play as attacking wing backs, which means they push high up the pitch to provide width. This allows the central three to defend zonally and protect the middle.

In the middle of the pitch, Moreno and Cesarini form a double pivot. Moreno focuses on shielding the defence and winning the second ball to keep possession moving. Cesarini acts as the player who carries the ball forward to connect the defensive unit with the front three. They must work together to press in a mid-block and prevent opponents from playing through the lines. Their main task is to recycle possession and ensure the team stays compact in the centre.

The attacking trio features Ferreyra as the lone striker who works to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Peucelle and Pedernera operate as wide attackers, often looking to cut inside to create chaos in the box. This movement creates space for Santamaría and Wergifker to overlap and deliver crosses. When the team loses the ball, Ferreyra and the wide players press from the front to force a long ball and win it back high up the pitch.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads through the movement of the wing backs. This creates many chances to whip it in from the flanks. Additionally, the team gains compactness when defending, as the five defenders and two midfielders can squeeze the space effectively. This makes it very hard for an opponent to break the line with a through ball.

The 5-2-3 formation provides River with a clear identity centered on defensive strength and rapid counters. It is a lineup best suited for facing teams that control possession and play with high attacking lines.
