Independiente employs a direct and counter attacking identity. Using a 5-2-3 formation, the team is built to sit deep and then break quickly. This lineup works to absorb pressure before hitting the opponent on the transition to find openings.

Bello stays in goal to protect the net. The defense operates as a back five with Leguizamón acting as the central defender to hold the line. Coletta and Lecea sit on either side of him to cover the middle and win the header. Martínez and Franzolini act as attacking wing backs, meaning they push high to overlap the winger and provide width. The whole unit works to defend zonally and keep the formation tight.

The midfield is a two-man unit with Sastre and De La Mata. They work to shield the defense and win the second ball in the middle. Sastre and De La Mata must pass through the lines to connect the back five to the front three. They also need to recycle possession to keep the team in control when under pressure. Their movement allows them to cover ground and support both the defense and the attack.

The attack features three players. Erico acts as a lone striker to hold up the ball. Zorrilla and Maril play as wide wingers who spread wide to stretch the defence. They look to cut inside or get to the byline to deliver early crosses and find the feet of the striker. Erico tries to pin the last defender, creating space for Zorrilla and Maril to hit in behind on the transition.

One major strength of this Independiente lineup is the compactness when defending in a low block. Having five defenders makes it very hard for opponents to play through the lines. Another advantage is the speed of transition, where the team can break quickly using the pace of the wide players. The overlapping runs from Martínez and Franzolini also create wide overloads to help the attack and stretch the defence.

The 5-2-3 is a tough formation that relies on defensive discipline and quick movement. This lineup is best used when facing teams that dominate possession and can be punished on the break.
