Bello · Lecea · Coletta · Franzolini · Leguizamón · Martínez · Sastre · De La Mata · Zorrilla · Maril · Erico

Independiente focuses on a high level of defensive solidity and rapid transitions through a 5-2-3. This formation is built to absorb pressure in a low block before breaking quickly. The goal is to remain hard to beat while using the width of the pitch to stretch the defence during attacks. This identity allows the team to stay compact and react to the movement of the ball.

Bello acts as the last line of defence in goal. The defensive unit operates as a back five with Leguizamón sitting in the middle to win the header and clear the lines. Coletta and Lecea play as the side centre-backs to provide a narrow defensive block. Martínez and Franzolini operate as attacking wing backs to provide the necessary width. Martínez will push up the left flank while Franzolini works to overlap the winger on the right side. This lineup allows the defenders to hold the line and stay compact when the ball is on the opposite side.

The midfield relies on a two-man pairing to control the center of the pitch. Sastre and De La Mata act as the engine room to connect the defence and the attack. De La Mata often drops to shield the defence and win the second ball. Sastre works to carry the ball forward and link play. They must press in a mid-block to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines. By doing this, they help the team win it back high up the pitch when possible.

The attacking unit features three players working in combination. Erico acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of the oncoming runners. Maril and Zorrilla play as wide attackers to stretch the opposition. Maril and Zorrilla look to cut inside to create chances or stay wide to receive long balls. This allows for quick transitions where the front three can hit in behind on the transition and exploit any gaps left by the opponent.

A main strength for Independiente is the compactness when defending deep. The presence of five defenders makes it very difficult for opponents to find space in the box. Another advantage is the ability to create wide overloads as Martínez and Franzolini push high up the pitch. This forces the opposition to defend more space and opens passing lanes for the midfielders to switch play.

The 5-2-3 formation is designed for teams that want to defend deep and counter at pace. It is best suited for matches against heavy possession teams where the goal is to deny the turn and strike on the break.
