Battagliero and Rivas act as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and track back when the ball is lost. The unit can drop into a low block to deny the turn of the opposition attackers.

In the middle of the pitch, Fernández and De La Mata form a double pivot. This midfield pairing is responsible to shield the defence and recycle possession. De La Mata works to link the defensive and attacking lines by playing short from the back and finding the feet of the striker. Fernández can carry the ball forward to help progress through the thirds. They must stay compact to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

The attacking front line consists of three players tasked with stretching the defence. Cervino and Mourín operate as wide wingers, with the intention to get to the byline or cut inside to create chances. Romay leads the line as a lone striker, often looking to hold up the ball and find the feet of the oncoming midfielders. This formation relies on Cervino and Mourín to pull wide, creating space for Romay to run in behind. The team looks to break quickly once the ball is won.

One major advantage for Independiente is the ability to create wide overloads from the overlapping wing backs. When Rivas and Battagliero push up, they force the opposition to defend more space. Another strength is the compactness when defending, as the back five and the double pivot make it very difficult to find gaps in the middle. This makes the team very difficult to play through.
