Jorgensen (Sanchez/Bettinelli) · James (Malo gusto) · Fofana (Adarabioyo/Disasi) · Colwill (Badiashile) · Cucurella (Renato Veiga) · Caicedo (Lavia) · Enzo Fernandez (Dewsbury Hall) · Palmer (Madueke) · Pedro Neto (Mudrik) · Nkunku (Joao Félix) · Jackson (Guiu)Chelsea aims to play a heavy vertical game through a 4-2-4. This lineup is built to hunt for the ball high up the pitch and strike with speed once it is won. By using a high number of attackers, the team seeks to stretch the opposition and create immediate threats in the final third.
Jorgensen plays between the posts to start the build up. The back line operates as a flat back four with Cucurella on the left and James on the right. Fofana and Colwill act as the central defenders, with Colwill known for his passing range and ability to play out from the back. This unit stays relatively high to compress the space. James and Cucurella must track back quickly to cover the wide areas when the team loses possession.
The midfield functions as a double pivot to provide a layer of protection for the defense. Enzo Fernandez acts as the deep lying playmaker who looks to switch play and find the forwards. He is joined by Caicedo, who provides immense pressing intensity to win the ball back in the middle of the park. These two must work together to shield the center backs and connect the defensive line to the front four.
In the attacking phase, Chelsea uses two forwards in a partnership with Nkunku and Jackson leading the line. Nkunku plays as a pressing centre forward to disrupt the opposition build up. On the flanks, Pedro Neto and Palmer act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create scoring chances. Pedro Neto uses his pace to threaten the space behind the defense, while Palmer looks to find the feet of the strikers or drive at the goal. This front four focuses on making runs in behind to exploit any gaps in the opposition line.
A major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to build from the back. The presence of four attackers allows Chelsea to isolate wide players in one on one situations once the ball moves to the flanks. This setup also creates numerical superiority in the attacking third during transitions.
This high pressing 4-2-4 is designed to overwhelm opponents through directness and speed. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play under pressure or leave large gaps between their midfield and defense.
