Inter Football Formation
Starting Lineup
L. Martínez · Arnautovic · Barella · Calhanoglu · Zielinski · de Vrij · Bastoni · Sommer · Pavard · Dimarco · DumfriesInter employs a 3-5-2 formation focused on high pressing and quick transitions. The lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and move forward with pace to exploit gaps. This style of play relies on winning the second ball and spreading wide to stretch the defense.
Sommer stays between the posts to command the area. The back three consists of Bastoni on the left who can play out from the back with his passing range. Pavard defends the right side while de Vrij stays central to win the header and cover the space behind his teammates. This defensive unit can drop into a low block or step up to catch the opponent offside.
The midfield is the engine of the team. Calhanoglu acts as a deep lying playmaker who uses his passing range to switch play and break the line. Barella works to press aggressively and carry the ball forward into the half spaces. Zielinski connects the defensive and attacking lines by moving between the lines. Dimarco and Dumfries operate as attacking wing backs to provide width. Dimarco will push high to whip it in while Dumfries uses his strength to drive into the box.
The attack uses a two man partnership. L. Martínez plays as a mobile striker who looks to run in behind the defense. Arnautovic acts as a target man to hold up the ball and lay it off for others. They work to pull defenders out of position to create space for midfielders to arrive late into the box. This formation allows them to play one two combinations to split the defense.
A key tactical advantage is the numerical superiority in the midfield. This allows Inter to compress the midfield and deny the turn to the opponent. The team also uses wide overloads when the wing backs overlap the wide areas. This creates chances to deliver early crosses into the box.
This 3-5-2 formation is built to control the center of the pitch and hit teams on the break. It is best suited for games where Inter can squeeze the space and win it back high up the pitch.
