Jackson (15)Chelsea looks to dominate games through high pressing and rapid ball movement using a 4-3-3. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and use quick transitions to punish the opposition. The goal is to use a high defensive line to squeeze the space and allow the midfield to control the center of the park.
F. JORGENSEN sits between the posts to organize the back line. Chelsea utilizes a flat back four where R. James acts as an attacking full back to provide width on the right. B. Chilwell plays as the left back, often looking to overlap to support the attack. In the center, T. ADARABIOYO and L. Colwill operate as the central defenders, with Colwill acting as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back while ADARABIOYO focuses on winning headers and clearing the lines.
The midfield functions with a single pivot and two central players to control the game. M. Caicedo plays as the sitting midfielder to shield the defense and intercept passes. Beside him, E. Fernandez and K. DEWSBURY-HALL work to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Fernandez uses his passing range to move the ball forward, while DEWSBURY-HALL makes late runs into the box to create extra numbers. This three man midfield works to win the second ball and ensure the team stays compact when defending.
Up front, the team uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. N. Jackson acts as the lone striker, playing as a pressing centre-forward to force errors from the opposition back line. On the wings, C. Palmer and C. Nkunku operate as inverted wingers who cut inside to threaten the goal. Palmer looks to find pockets of space to create, while Nkunku uses his movement to find the feet of the striker or arrive late in the area. This creates constant threat through combinations and runs in behind.
A major strength for Chelsea is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win the ball back quickly. The team also creates wide overloads when R. James and B. Chilwell push forward to support the wingers. By having the wingers cut inside, they leave space for the full backs to overlap, which makes it difficult for the opposition to defend the flanks.
This 4-3-3 formation is designed for a side that wants to control the tempo through aggressive pressing. It is best suited for games where the opponent plays a high line and can be exploited with pace.
