Melgar relies on a direct and vertical style of play, working primarily within a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to win the second ball and hit the opposition on the break with speed. The team seeks to win possession and quickly move the ball toward the strikers to stretch the defence.

Campana guards the goal as the last line of defence. The back line operates as a flat back four, with Ramírez and Gutiérrez acting as full backs who can push up to support the attack. In the middle, Obando and Bustamante defend the central area, focusing on staying compact and making sure they do not get caught too far from the goal. These central defenders must be ready to clear the lines and mark any runners. The unit works together to hold a line and squeeze the space when the team pushes up.

The midfield functions with a clear division of labor to link the defence to the attack. Palacios plays as a single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Alongside him, Arias and Salas work as two central midfielders to control the tempo and carry the ball forward. G. Melgar uses two forwards to lead the attack, providing a constant threat in the box. Zúñiga and Cuesta operate as a partnership, where one can act as a target man to hold up the ball while the other looks to run in behind. They work to pin the last defender and create space for G. Neyra to arrive late into the box. When attacking from wide areas, the team looks to use the full width of the pitch to whip it in or deliver early crosses.
