Starting Lineup

Cucurella · James · Colwill · W. Fofana · Sánchez · Caicedo · E. Fernández · Lukaku · Palmer · J. Félix · Nkunku

Chelsea relies on a high press and rapid verticality through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and attack the opposition with speed. They want to squeeze the space in the middle and force turnovers in advanced areas to catch the defense out of position.

Sánchez stands between the posts to command the area. The back line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders, Colwill and W. Fofana, who play a high line. Colwill is a ball playing defender with the ability to progress through the thirds with his passing, while W. Fofana provides aerial strength to defend crosses. The defensive duo must be brave to step up and set the offside trap, relying on their ability to cover the space behind.

A heavy five man midfield block controls the center of the pitch. James and Cucurella act as the defensive anchors, with James sitting deeper to shield the defense. E. Fernández and Caicedo operate as the central engine, where E. Fernández uses his passing range to switch play and Caicedo uses his pressing intensity to win the second ball. Palmer plays in the hole as an attacking ten, looking to arrive late into the box or play through the lines. The midfield unit connects the defense to the front three.

The attacking front three consists of J. Félix, Nkunku, and Lukaku. Lukaku serves as the target man to hold up the ball and win the header against defenders. J. Félix plays as an inverted winger on the left who wants to cut inside, while Nkunku operates on the right to create chances. They often combine in tight spaces to pull the defenders out of position. This formation creates many runs in behind and allows the Blues to hit in behind on the transition.

One major advantage for Chelsea is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. With five players in the middle, they create numerical superiority in midfield and can easily squeeze the space. They are also very dangerous in terms of speed of transition, moving from a defensive block to an attacking position in seconds. Such movement allows them to isolate wide players in one on one situations when the opposition is stretched.

The 2-5-3 formation is a bold way to dominate the pitch and pin the opponent back. It is best suited for games where the team wants to suffocate the opposition and win the ball high up the pitch.
