Starting Lineup

Prass · Wöber · Lienhart · Posch · Grillitsch · Pentz · Sabitzer · Baumgartner · Wimmer · Seiwald · Laimer

Austria focuses on controlling the center of the pitch using a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the middle third and squeeze the space available to the opponent. By flooding the center, the team aims to keep the ball and force the other side into mistakes.

Pentz stands between the posts to manage the defensive unit. The back line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders, Lienhart and Wöber, who must hold the line. Because there are only two, they often step up to set the offside trap and play out from the back. Lienhart and Wöber need to be ready to cover large areas of space if the opposition tries to hit in behind on the transition. They defend zonally to protect the center.

The midfield is the engine of this Austria lineup, consisting of six players. Prass and Posch act as a double pivot to shield the two defenders and win the second ball. Grillitsch sits just ahead of them to recycle possession and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Ahead of him, Seiwald, Laimer, and Sabitzer occupy the half-spaces to press aggressively. Sabitzer and Laimer use their ability to carry the ball forward to drive into the final third, while Seiwald works to break the line with his passing.

The attack features two forwards, Wimmer and Baumgartner, working in a partnership. Wimmer often pulls wide to stretch the defence and create space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. Baumgartner acts as a pressing centre-forward to trigger a press from the front. Both players look to combine in tight spaces and move in ways that allow them to receive on the half-turn. Their aim is to use the midfield overload to find the feet of the striker or play through the lines with quick passes.

This formation offers immense numerical superiority in midfield, making it hard for teams to find passing lanes. The ability to press in coordinated waves from the front and middle allows the team to win it back high up the pitch. Furthermore, the team can switch play quickly once the ball is won, using the width of the midfielders to stretch the opponent.

This formation is designed to suffocate teams that prefer to play through the middle. It is best suited for matches where Austria needs to dominate possession and force the opponent into a low block.
