On the flanks, Azpilicueta and Lino act as full backs, with Azpilicueta often staying deeper to protect the zone while Lino can push up to support the wide midfielders. The defensive unit stays narrow to protect the central areas and shift as a single block.

The midfield functions as a four man unit designed to congest the center. Gallagher and Koke (C) occupy central roles to squeeze the space and win the second ball. When the team attacks, they look to play through the lines or hit in behind on the transition. The wingers look to spread wide to create space for the central attackers to exploit.

This formation offers great compactness when defending in a mid-block. The team can quickly shift from a defensive posture to an attacking one through the pace of Llorente and the creativity of Griezmann. By using a two man strike force, Atlético can pin the last defender and create chaos in the box during quick breaks. The presence of Koke allows the team to recycle possession and control the tempo when they decide to push up.
