Starting Lineup

Andrade · Smolcic · Ziereis · Stojkovic · M. Ljubicic · Usor · R. Zulj · Horvath · Berisha · Entrup · Lawal

LASK aims to play a heavy vertical game by pressing high and attacking with speed. This lineup relies on a 2-5-3 formation to congest the central areas of the pitch and dominate the ball.

Lawal stays between the posts to organize the defensive line and command his area. Smolcic and Ziereis form a narrow back two that must be comfortable playing out from the back under pressure. Smolcic works as a ball playing defender to find the midfielders, while Ziereis focuses on covering the space behind the high line to sweep up long balls. Because there are only two defenders, they must be ready to step up and intercept passes to prevent the opposition from breaking the line.

The midfield works as a compact unit of five players to control the center. Andrade and Stojkovic function as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession when needed. Horvath and Berisha operate as two eights who move into the half spaces to link the defense to the front three. R. Zulj acts as an attacking ten, playing in the hole to find space between the lines and play through the lines to the attackers.

Three players make up the attacking line to pin the last defender. Entrup leads the line as a pressing centre-forward, looking to win the ball high up the pitch and harass the back line. M. Ljubicic plays on the left as an inverted winger who looks to cut inside and create, whereas Usor stays wide on the right to provide width and stretch the defence. This movement allows LASK to attack in combinations and quickly hit in behind on the transition.

A major advantage for LASK is the numerical superiority in the center of the pitch, which makes it difficult for teams to find passing lanes. The density of the midfield allows them to squeeze the space and press in a mid-block or high up the pitch. Additionally, the formation creates wide overloads when the midfielders push up to support the wingers, making it hard for the opposition to defend the flanks or track back during attacks.

This formation is built for a high pressing and vertical identity. It is best suited for matches where the team wants to suffocate the opponent and win the ball back high up the pitch.
