Mata and Tagliafico must track back to cover the space left behind when the team pushes up.

The midfield operates as a double pivot to hold the center. Matic works to shield the defence and breaks the line with his passing range. Tessman stays close to Matic to recycle possession and connect the defensive and attacking lines. This duo must work hard to protect the space between the lines when the four attackers stay high. They are tasked to win the second ball and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

Up front, Lyon uses four attackers to stretch the defence. Nuamah and Benrahma play as wide wingers, with Benrahma often looking to cut inside to find the feet of the striker.
