Chelsea Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Palmer · Joao Felix · Enzo · Caicedo · Nkunku · Pedro Neto · Cucurella · Jorgensen · Reece James · Fofana · ColwillChelsea plays with a high press and rapid transition identity using a 5-2-3. This formation is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and move the play quickly through the thirds. By using a heavy press, the team seeks to disrupt the opposition and create scoring opportunities in the early stages of an attack.
Jorgensen sits in goal to organize the defensive unit and sweep behind the line. The back five features Caicedo holding the central position to cover the area and win the second ball. Colwill and Fofana act as the wider center backs to provide cover and mark runners when the wing backs push up. Reece James and Cucurella play as attacking wing backs to stretch the defense and provide width. The whole unit works to squeeze the space and maintain a compact formation.
The midfield utilizes a two man pairing with Enzo and Palmer. Enzo acts as a deep lying playmaker to recycle possession and play short from the back. Palmer operates as a carrier who drives forward to break the line and connect the defense to the attacking unit. They must both work to cover the gaps left when the wing backs push up to overlap.
The front line consists of three attackers. Nkunku functions as a pressing centre-forward to trigger a press and harass the opposition back line. Joao Felix and Pedro Neto act as inverted wingers who cut inside to find space in the half spaces. This movement is designed to allow Reece James and Cucurella to overlap the winger and whip it in toward the box. Chelsea aims to hit in behind on the transition to exploit the space behind the defense.
This lineup offers the advantage of creating wide overloads through the attacking wing backs. The team can also press high in coordinated waves to win it back high up the pitch. Additionally, the presence of Colwill and Fofana allows Chelsea to play out from the back and progress through the thirds. This allows the team to maintain control when they have the ball.
The 5-2-3 is a high intensity lineup focused on verticality. This formation is best suited for facing opponents that play a high line and can be caught on the break.
